Instructors

Allyson Appen, Rokudan, is a sixth degree black belt with over 28 years training in Cuong Nhu. Complementing her Cuong Nhu expertise with six years of aikido and three years of judo, she is now concentrating on developing her skills in internal arts. Allyson stresses alignment and technique over strength, and believes in the power of a positive attitude--that and classes should be really fun. She served as president of the Cuong Nhu board of directors as well as for years as regional representative. Selected as "Martial Artist of the Year" in 2000 by the Pacific Association of Women Martial Artists (PAWMA), Allyson has also served on the PAWMA board of directors.

Amy Weiner, Yondan, is a fourth degree black belt in Cuong Nhu and received a 2nd degree black belt (Nidan) in Aikido from Kayla Feder Sensei (6th Dan) in 2007. She has been training in the martial arts for 24 years. She was president of the Pacific Association of Women Martial Artists (PAWMA) in 1987-89, and served on the board of directors for Cuong Nhu. Amy feels that her primary goal in training is reflected in the first of the Cuong Nhu code of ethics: Cuong Nhu students should strive to improve themselves and their abilities in the martial arts in order to serve the people.

John Klopf, Shodan, is a first-degree black belt with over 19 years in Cuong Nhu. He is a life member and has served on the board of directors for the style. He also founded the Harvard College Cuong Nhu dojo (now defunct) in 1990. John has benefited from a wide variety of Cuong Nhu instruction -- he has trained in Cleveland, Boston, San Diego, and Berkeley! When people ask John if he's ever used his martial arts training, he used to say "no" -- but now he replies "I use it every day!"

Raimi Quiton, Shodan, is on leave from Tuyê't Tan as she pursues her PhD in Neuroscience on the East Coast. We're waiting patiently for you to return, Raimi!

Anastasia Cohen, Shodan, with ten years in Cuong Nhu. She has also been training in Seibukan Jujutsu with Sensei Mike Kent for over three years and was recently promoted to Shodan in that system. Anastasia feels that martial arts is above all a tool for self improvement: mental, emotional, and physical, and that everything that is practiced "on the mat" may be positively applied in all other areas of life.

Tuyê't Tan Dojo

The Vietnamese translation for Tuyê't Tan is "snow melting". In an analogy described by one of our students, each snowflake is an individual, but after the snowflake falls, it unites with the other snowflakes to create a single vision (unity). In time, all the snow melts, transforming into a river of complete oneness to nurture the people. We feel that martial arts training helps to develop in each individual self-confidence, self-control, and a non-defeatist attitude. While providing a safe and supportive environment for men, women, and children, we strive for quality martial arts training, and give lots of individual attention to maximize the student's experience in our school.
